Importance of ICT to today's generation

IMPORTANCE OF ICT TO TODAY'S GENERATION

By Abba Jime Mustapha.

ICT, an acronym for Information and Communication Technology involves the business of developing and using technology to process information and aid communication. It can also be said to be the technologies involved with communicating with computers. It normally involves the use of methods via computer systems for gathering, storing, retrieving, processing, analysing, and transmitting information. Information and communication technologies have created a unified world through technologies like the Internet, and the World Wide Web in which people, computers, networks, academia and the like INTERACT globally with ease.

ICT has had a positive impact on education. Having gone through drastic changes over the years, ICT has made teaching and learning very easy to come by through both formal and informal teaching methods like well-furnished computer aided laboratories and advanced modern day tuition like the open learning module currently dominating the world. Thus communities that could not get access to institutions of higher learning like the universities are now using online and open learning concepts to upgrade themselves and consequently add their quota to national and global development.

Database administration in ICT involves collections, management and storage of interrelated information. The purpose of databases is to store uniform, accurate and standardized data at centralized and identified locations to help data sharing among all the applications requiring it, to maintain high and acceptable standards to prevent redundancy of data, security of data, and mostly importantly the integrity of information/data within the database. By so doing institutions like schools, colleges and universities can across share information, which can lead to higher standards in education and thus research at a lesser cost.

Additionally, in ICT, networking is the connecting of two or more computers and other devices that allows them to share resources. It can be done between computers in a peer to peer environment like homes and small offices, on a server based environment like corporate entities and sometimes across continents. One important factor of networking is e-commerce. Online marketing has grown in recent years. Businesses that embrace online marketing nowadays has more competitive edge over traditional businesses who have failed to embrace net computing.

Software engineering is the branch of ICT which involves designing, writing, testing, implementing and maintaining software. It forms the beginning of operational design and development of virtually all computer systems. It can be found on application software on personal computers, connectivity between computers, operating systems and includes all other software, in ICT software engineering can never be overlooked, because computers would not function without software developed by engineers.

The few importance of ICT enumerated above together with others means that today’s generation needs computers more than any other device in the world.
