Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, has announced the establishment of 12 Centres of Excellence to promote research in tertiary institutions across the country.
Two universities in each of the six geo-political zones have been selected to host the Centres while the agency has already laid out plans for more such centres in other universities in the Fund’s 2021 programs while polytechnics and colleges of education will also have centres put up for them by the TETFund in subsequent years.
Quoting news agency and TETFund sources, The PYRAMID Correspondent reports that Prof. Bogoro made these revelations at the Fund’s 2020 Board Retreat whose main focus was on Research Grants.
The 2020 Retreat themed, “Consolidating TETFund as a Model Intervention Agency for Nigeria’s Knowledge Economy” provided an opportunity for the first major public engagement of the Fund’s newly named Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, Mutwallen Borno.
At the Retreat at sa tended by Board members and top Management of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam also announced plans by the Fund to provide at least 200,000 bed spaces for students in various Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Matawalle Kashim Imam who was recently appointed Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Trustees said despite the massive intervention by TETFund, the Board was concerned that the nation’s tertiary institutions still lack adequate accommodation spaces and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities.
It may be recalled, Mutawallin Borno, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, a frontline politician from Borno state in the North East was appointed Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees (BOT) by the President, General Muhammadu Buhari effective, May 14, 2020.
Mutawalli Kashim Imam, who clocked 58 on May 8, was named Chairman in an appointment letter signed by Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu, who announced that the new Chairman’s tenure will, in the first instance last 4 years from the May 14th date, “consequent upon which it would be reviewed based on performance”.
The Minister’s letter said: “I write to convey to you the approval of His Execellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, of your appointment as chairman of the board of trustees of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Abuja with effect from May 14, 2020,” the letter read.
“The appointment is for a tenure of four (4) years in the first instance and may be renewed for a further term of four (4) years, upon satisfactory performance.
“The conditions of service and remunerations of this appointment is guided by the Public Service Rules and Extant Circulars. Please, accept my congratulations and sincere wishes for a successful tenure.”
The new BOT Chairman, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno state in 2003 and 2007 respectively losing out on both occasions to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
He was the favoured candidate for founding National Secretary of of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the inception of the merger losing to current Yobe Governor and Caretaker and Convention Committee Chairman Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, of the ANPP group.
Mutawalli Kashim Imam was sponsored by the new PDP led by the five PDP Governors and top legislators who worked with the General Buhari led CPC and Asiwaju Tinubu ACN to form the APC in the build up to the 2015 General Elections that shoves PDP’s Jonathan out of power.
It could be recalled that former Chairman of the TETFund BOT Chief Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba another Nigerian politician and lawyer was at the inception of the President Buhari second term appointed Minister of State for Education thereby leaving a vacancy at the BOT of TETFund.
Professor Abubakar Adamu Rashid, another BOT member and Executive Secretary of Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) has held forte as Acting Chariman of the Fund’s BOT, before the May 14th appointment of new Chairman, Mutawallin Borno Kashim Imam.
