Dr. Yunusa Adamu Dangwani has distributed tonnes of food to PDP Chairmen in Kano’s 44 Local Governments as part of Kwankwasiyya's support to top partisans for this year’s Ramadan.
Former Chief of Staff to Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso during his second term, at inception in 2011, Dr. Dangwani was also Presidential and Govenorship Director General of the Atiku Abubakar and Abba Kabir Yusuf PDP Campaign in the 2019 general election gave out millions of naira worth of food items.
The former Chief of Staff who was later made commissioner of water resources in the Rabiu Kwankwaso Government in Kano is a top chieftain, strategist and close confidant of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former state governor. Dr. Dangwani, a trained doctor who bagged a Ph.D from a Russian University is one of Kano’s top Consultants, a Specialist in Urology.
In 2019 it was speculated that Dr. Dangwani was Kwankwaso’s anointed governorship candidate. He was however dropped for Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kwankwaso’s former personal assistant in his first term from 1999 to 2003 and again in 2011 to 2012 when he was promoted Commissioner of Works.
The distribution of food items by Dr. Dangwani has been described as unusual in the Kwankwasiyya Movement. The tradition is that only Kwankwaso, the Supreme Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Political Movement who doles out any kind of largese of the type, which according to insiders was meant to forestall competitions, clashes and misunderstandings among members.
Many party members and beneficiaries have expressed appreciation of the gesture by the former chief of staff.
It’s not clear whether Dangwani is interested to vie for the governorship in 2023. The question is wether Kwankwaso who has the last word in who becomes what in his political group will choose another candidate ahead of Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose popular political campaign tag is “Abba Gida-Gida”.
Dangwani, a staunch leader of Kwankwasiyya and loyalist of the big boss, Kwankwaso has all along accepted Kwankwaso’s every decision right from his first term in 1999, earning him the respect of a majority of Kwankwasiyya adherents. He is also reputed to have been a key member of the Kwankwaso team that designed and supervised his many populist projects.
Online publication Politics Digest in its publication quoted a staunch Kwankwasiyya member, Abdullahi Ismail saying: “If there is any Caliph of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Nigeria, Dangwani should be that person, looking at his commitment and dedication to Kwankwasiyya school of political thought”.
Despite being passed over for all prominent political posts since he was dropped from his powerful post as Chief of Staff in 2012, Dangwani has remained by the side of Kwankwaso through all the turmoil in Kwankwasiyya and the carpet crossing of many other top Kwankwaso allies since 2015.
Dr. Dangwani a grassroots PDP Kwankwasiyya mobiliser was in 2016 arrested and detained for many months by the State Security Service while on his way to travel out of the country at the Malam Aminu Kano International Ariport over allegations suspected to have political undertones after a parting of ways between Kwankwaso and Ganduje, his former two term Deputy that he anointed to take over from him as Governor. Dr. Dangwani was released without being charged to court.
Yunusa Adamu Dangwani served as Kwankwaso’s Chief of Staff, while in the first term of Kwankwaso he had served as Executive Secretary of Kano State Hospital Services Management Board. He had served as Chief Medical Director of of a number of Kano state owned hospitals, including the Imam Wali Urology Center on Airport road.
The Russian trained medical doctor is believed to be one of the top grassroots mobilizers of the Kwankwasiyya and a leader enjoying widespread support among the movement’s members due to his jovial and good human relations.
